Citizenship Through Naturalization

Miami Florida Citizenship Lawyer

What You Need To Be Eligible For Naturalization

If a person is not born a U.S. Citizen, they can become one through a process known as Naturalization. Minor children that are not U.S. Citizens can also become citizens when their parents Naturalize by obtaining a Certificate of Citizenship. An experienced citizenship lawyer can help you determine if you already are a citizen or if you would be a good fit to naturalize.

To be eligible for naturalization, you must meet certain requirements in addition to be an individual of good moral character.

The following requirements must be met:

  1. You must be 18 or older.
  2. You must be a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. for a minimum of five years. The residency requirement is reduced to three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen, and there are exceptions for individuals who have honorable service in the U.S. armed forces.
  3. You must have been physically present in the U.S. for more than half of the required residency period.
  4. You must be able to read, write and speak English, and pass a test in basic U.S. history and government.

Good moral character: means that USCIS will look into your criminal record. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services defines Good Moral Character as “character which measures up to the standards of average citizens of the community where the applicant resides.” Simply stated, it means proving that you are an upstanding member of society.

Please be aware that a conviction of a drug offense, violent crime or even drunk driving may disqualify you from completing the process.
